About the log
Old Quest Log is an adventurer's journal of games played. Every game gets logged, played properly and scored honestly.
What gets logged
Mostly older and retro games, games already on the shelf and games that are free to play. No chasing review copies or launch-day hype: just good games, old favourites and the odd forgotten gem.
Some entries belong to a series, such as first impressions of free MMOs after about twelve hours, or old favourites played again to see whether they still hold up.
The candle rating
Every review is scored from half a candle to five, in half-candle steps. One candle per point; a half point is a half-burnt candle. Five is deliberate: on a small scale every point matters, so scores don't creep up the way they do out of ten or a hundred.
- An all-timer. Clear your weekend.
- Four full candles and one half-burnt: brilliant, with a flaw or two.
- Worth your time if the genre is your thing.
- Something here, but hard to recommend.
- The lowest score there is. Rarely given.
Basic and extended reviews
A basic review gives one overall score. It is the usual choice for retro games, where marking 1990s graphics against modern ones would be unfair.
An extended review adds five category scores (gameplay, story, graphics, sound and replayability) alongside the overall score, for bigger or more modern games where the detail helps.
